Rojo
ROJO are a creative film-making team based in Paris. They are comprised of Frenchman François Roland and American Joe Baar. The two began collaborating in the mid 90's, when they both worked in the On-Air Design and Promo department of National French Television Network FRANCE 2. In the several years spent at the network, they created hundreds of motion graphics spots and developed a strong grasp of post-production techniques, which would later become one of their trademarks.
They formed the duo ROJO in 1996, and quickly moved on to direct dozens of commercials and title sequences (for both television and feature films), as well as several award-winning short fiction subjects.
At the same time, they continue to create motion design packages for television, not only for FRANCE 2, but also for EUROSPORT, the BBC, and UNIVERSAL's action & suspense channel 13TH STREET. In fact, they redesigned 13TH STREET's entire on-air branding campaign in 2001. This campaign was awarded at PROMAX-BDA 2002 in Los Angeles. Since 2002, the duo have a flourishing music video career in London, developing playful and graphic work for international artists such as The Kills, Timo Maas, Starsailor, and DJ Shadow. Their documentary "Ash: Love and Destruction" aired on Channel Four in 2003, to much acclaim.
ROJO's originality stem not only from their international roots, but from their distinct individual backgrounds. François spent five years as an Art Director and graphic designer at Ogilvy & Mather in Paris, whereas Joe comes from a more technical background, serving as cameraman and editor on numerous films and documentaries. This obvious "complementarity" is what undoubtedly brought them together in the first place, but over the years they have developed a working method based more on open collaboration than on the division of labor.
